Heritage and News - December 2006

Ed Bearss Too late for inclusion in this issue, Ed Bearss unveiled a Civil War Marker in Liverpool on November 29th. Literally a "flying visit", Len Ellison picked Ed up from the airport, took him to the presentation and then promptly took him back. A full report will appear in the April issue. Bearss in the Woods The energy of this man puts the rest of us to shame. The editor sent me details of Ed's North Carolina tour in January - Jan. 9 Sanford Ednor Iron Furnace Fundraising Banquet, Jan. 11 Pinehurst RCWRT Jan. 12 Tarboro CWRT, Jan. 13 Burlington CWRT, Jan. 14 New Bern CWRT. Flights to Virginia Cosmos have announced flights from Manston Kent to Newport Virginia starting from March. Details are on their website or you can call them at 0871 423 8688. He only lives 5 minutes away and might even drop you off and collect you! Web Watch: December 2006 It's grey in black and white.. The Richmond Daily Dispatch (1860 - 1865) has been digitized and is now available online. It is completely searchable and chock full of stories that haven't seen the light of day in the past 140 years. This is the result of a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and collaboration between the University of Richmond, Tufts University's Perseus Project, and the Virginia Centre for Digital History. You can search for a word or phrase as well as browse by date or by calendar year. It's brilliant. Podcasts Technology has caught up and you can download podcasts of three battlefield walks. The new CivilWarTraveler.com podcast tour of Little Round Top on the Gettysburg battlefield is now available. The four- stop, 53-minute tour is narrated by Gettysburg National Military Park ranger/historian Eric Campbell. Listen to the podcast or download a copy at Civilwartraveler.com or via iTunes. Where you subscribe to the podcast series already, the new Gettysburg tour should come to your iTunes or other podcatcher automatically. The first two podcast tours, Malvern Hill and Gaines' Mill, both part of Richmond, Virginia, National Battlefield Park, were launched this fall and were popular enough to be listed in the top iTunes podcasts under the category Society & Culture/ History. Valley of the Shadow The Valley of the Shadow is a digital archive of primary sources that document the lives of people in Augusta County, Virginia, and Franklin County, Pennsylvania during the era of the American Civil War. Here you may explore thousands of original documents that allow you to see what life was like during the Civil War for the men and women of Augusta and Franklin.
